Opportunity/Context

With over 30 years of heritage navigating the Aegean Sea, Kos Cruise Experts is a trusted, family-run cruise operator based in Kos Harbour, Greece. Their fleet includes the Captain Morgan, a modern luxury cruiser, and the Dory, a beloved glass bottom boat renowned for underwater sightseeing.

These popular boat tours cater to an international clientele, offering multi-island itineraries, swim stops, and captivating views. However, the company faced a recurring challenge: delivering multilingual commentary onboard in a way that didn’t compromise the calm and scenic atmosphere of the cruises.

Historically, crew members used loudspeakers to provide tour narration in multiple languages. While informative, this approach interrupted the tranquil experience, cluttered the decks with noise, and limited guest engagement, especially for non-native English speakers or families with children.

Kos Cruise Experts recognized the need to modernize the onboard experience without losing their local identity or disrupting their service flow. They sought a solution that would:
• Maintain a peaceful onboard environment
• Provide accurate, multilingual information
• Be intuitive and accessible for passengers
• Elevate the overall guest experience
• Avoid increasing staffing demands

Solution/Outcome

To solve this challenge, Kos Cruise Experts partnered with Vox Group, a leader in digital audio solutions for tourism, to implement a tailored POPGuide multilingual audio experience.

The integration of the POPGuide platform brought a suite of high-impact upgrades:
• Smartphone-based autoplay narration
Passengers now receive an autoplay audio tour on their own devices via the POPGuide app, triggered by geolocation. As the boat approaches points of interest, such us reefs, islets, historic landmarks, or swim stops, the app automatically plays relevant commentary in the selected language (English, German, Dutch, French, or Italian). The interactive digital map mirrors the exact cruise path of both the Captain Morgan and Dory vessels.
• Easy Guest Access via QR Code
A unique QR code is provided to every guest upon booking. Scanning it launches a seamless onboarding process: the app downloads with all relevant content preloaded, including navigation from the guest’s accommodation to Kos Harbour, eliminating friction and adding real-world convenience.
• Locally-Authored Scripts with Professional Audio
The content was co-created with Kos Cruise Experts to reflect the company’s voice and local heritage. Narrations were professionally recorded, preserving the authenticity of the original scripts while delivering them with modern clarity through smartphones.
• Enhanced Onboard Experience & Operational Efficiency
Guests now explore the Aegean in complete tranquility, listening privately through earphones. The atmosphere aboard remains serene, allowing crew members to focus entirely on hospitality and safety rather than multilingual announcements.
• Value-Added Service with No Extra Cost to Guests
Including POPGuide access in the ticket price created instant added value. There’s no need for additional hardware, no maintenance, and no learning curve for staff. Guests feel more engaged, informed, and personally guided, without intrusive technology or noise.

By embedding Vox POPGuide into their offering, Kos Cruise Experts achieved:
Seamless multilingual delivery across five core languages
Improved guest satisfaction through immersive storytelling
Operational efficiency by reducing staff demands
Brand elevation through innovative, guest-centric service
Enhanced accessibility and personalization for international visitors

This digital transformation illustrates how a heritage cruise operator can modernize sustainably, enhancing experience without losing local charm. Kos Cruise Experts now stands out among Kos boat tours as a leader in combining tradition, technology, and tranquillity.

The Result

With guides speaking into a Vox transmitter pre-set to its own unique frequency, voice commentary was clearly heard by passengers within a 200-metre radius, allowing each tour to flow in a fluid motion and removing the need for the guides to raise their voice. Princess Cruises and their passengers were highly satisfied with their Kirkwall experience. With this increase in customer satisfaction Prince Cruises decided to include Vox Tour Guide Systems in their 2018 UK programme. European Cruise Service now have included the Vox Tour Guide System as an inexpensive, added-value option to complement any future client shore excursion programmes.
