Important Update: UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) Rollout

As a thought leader in the tourism industry, we strive to keep you informed with the latest developments. Today, we bring you crucial updates on the UK’s Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) system—a significant change impacting inbound tourism in the coming months, as highlighted by UKInbound.org.

What Is the ETA?

The ETA is a digital permission required for visitors who do not need a visa to travel to the UK. It allows multiple journeys over two years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first. This initiative aims to streamline entry procedures and enhance security measures.

Key Rollout Dates

The ETA system is expanding in two phases:

  1. Eligible Non-Europeans
    • Apply From: 27 November 2024
    • Mandatory From: 8 January 2025
  2. Eligible Europeans
    • Apply From: 5 March 2025
    • Mandatory From: 2 April 2025

By 2 April 2025, all visitors who do not need a visa—except British and Irish citizens—must have an ETA to travel to the UK.

Who Needs an ETA?

An ETA is required for:

  • Tourism Visits: Up to 6 months
  • Visiting Family and Friends: Up to 6 months
  • Business Trips: Short-term visits up to 6 months
  • Short-term Study: Courses up to 6 months
  • Creative Workers: Visits up to 3 months under the Creative Worker visa concession
  • Permitted Paid Engagements
  • Transit Passengers: Including those not passing through UK border control
