As part of its ongoing efforts to streamline and digitise the immigration system, the UK Government is rolling out new Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) requirements for many travellers. Starting in 2025, visitors from a broad range of countries will need an ETA to enter or transit through the UK. This represents a significant shift, especially for those who previously did not need to engage with UK immigration before travelling.
Key Dates for ETA Implementation
The ETA will be introduced in phases, with specific dates for different groups:
- 27 November 2024: Eligible non-European nationals can begin applying for an ETA, which will be mandatory for travel from 8 January 2025.
- 5 March 2025: Eligible Europeans can apply for an ETA, required for travel from 2 April 2025.
By April 2025, almost all visitors to the UK, including those coming for tourism, business, family visits, and short-term study, will need an ETA. The only exceptions are British and Irish citizens, who will not need an ETA.

How to Apply for an ETA
The process of applying for an ETA is designed to be simple and efficient. Visitors will use the UK ETA app or the UK Government website to apply. At a cost of £10, the ETA will allow multiple trips to the UK for up to six months over a two-year period or until the traveller’s passport expires—whichever comes first.
This new requirement applies not only to tourists but also to business visitors, those attending short-term study programmes, and even individuals transiting through the UK. A detailed walkthrough of the application process can be found here.
Why the ETA is Important
This shift is part of the UK’s ambition to enhance border security while making the immigration process more efficient and digitised. Similar systems have been introduced by other nations, including the USA and the EU, aiming to improve traveller experience and safety. This modernisation brings the UK in line with global trends in border management and security.
